Linux Mint on Laptop

May 23, 2010

Just loaded Linux Mint on older laptop and it works rather nicely. Amazed at the speed and what I can do with it. Best part is the amount of software out there ready to download and use. Using the system to make this post to the blog…so no much to getting used to using it.

Want to add WINE (I think that is the name) so I can run some of my WinDoze stuff that is not yet ported over to Linux.

Getting on in Years

May 22, 2010

Just heard that a ham radio buddy of mine for over 40 years passed away.  Was not expecting news like that today. Getting on in years is one thing we all do without choice, so maybe I need to make each day more productive and not so lazy.

I hope to start posting more meaningful items in the future. Also watch the QRPedia site for stuff I have been doing in the shack.

God Bless Warren, W8SJK!!!

Post FDIM-Hamvention

May 20, 2010

We skipped the trip to Shipshewanna due to weather and having no awning.  I didn’t realize how much I depended on my awning on the RV for doing stuff. Due to weather, I had no way to set up my pole…but bought something that may resolve that situation. Overall, the trip to Dayton was great as usually. I’ve come to realize that the annual trek to FDIM is more about the people than it is about buying stuff…so I expect I will be there again next year, which will be my 20th Hamvention and 13th FDIM…how time flies…LOL!!!

Have a new awning system on order and it should arrive next week. No plans as of yet for the three weeks before our trip to NY.  Our house-sitter/cat-babysitter’s says anytime is fine for them, so maybe a trip to Shipshewanna and a short one to see the grandkids…then off to NY and then to FD with the Piggies in Cinci.

Good weather today, so will get the grass cut and then hang out on 40 meters for a bit. I missed the contest last night as I forgot about it. Need to start setting my reminder thingie on my I-Touch.

FDIM 2010-Hamvention

May 15, 2010

Made the Thursday night event at the hotel. Meet Jason, NT7S, which was a big highlight for me! Jason is a very humble and quite guy. We yacked for a bit and then made our way into the Big Room to see what was for sale and the many projects for various contest categories. I went up and down the rows twice but couldn’t find Jason’s entry…that was a big disappointment for me! Jason was in the forum/presentation for the new Flex 1500 HF SDR radio. You could not have squeezed one more body in that room…LOL. We let before the presentation was over, so hope to get info from him later. Thanks Jason for making the long haul to attend FDIM this year!!!!

Bought a new rig/lit from Doug and the gang at Hendrick’s QRP Kits…I really like how he brings a new kit each year to FDIM. I buy it no matter what so he comes back and I have a good supply of kits to build during the colder months. Saw Diz and a few other Flying Piggies and some old friends who have made our hobby so wonderful.

We had our annual cookout here at the KOA and had about 100 in attendance with great weather. This was the first really good weather we have had since we arrived last week. I lost our awning due to wind and rain early Tuesday morning so will have to get it replaced when we get back home. We called the house and the sitter says all is good back at QTH and the cats are getting quite spoiled…great! Anyone interested in two very lovable cats (hope the XYL isn’t reading this blog!!!).

Heading back to Hara again in the morning and plan to spend all my allowance on whatever. Didn’t bring a list this year…but sure have a long one now that I have seen so much stuff…LOL. Kenwood has a new HF rig, the 590 and I hear it is a really good rig with roofing filters and the same footprint as the 570.

That is about it for now. Hope to add more if the park’s Wi-Fi can handle all the ham campers who all seem to have brought laptops with them….

FDIM and Hamvention 2010

May 7, 2010

Getting the RV ready for the annual trek to Dayton.  Kitty-house sitter arranged and grass is cut…so almost all ready.  Planning on using only CW and QRP for this trip.  Taking my K1 and FT-817 for playtime and maybe a book or downloaded an electronic version of some good story.

Hope to make Field Day this year but not sure where it will be from. Have three locations to use, NY, OH, or MI…but will let the XYL decide where she wants to be at the end of June.  If your going to Dayton, drop me a line at wb8icn@gmail.com and maybe we can meet up either in the boneyard or at one of the FDIM activities.
